How to declutter and organise your wardrobe by Amy Goodwin

Do you feel like you have a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear? As someone who has worked with numerous clients to streamline and organise their living spaces, I know that a clutter-free wardrobe can make a huge difference to your daily life. A well-organised wardrobe not only saves you time and reduces stress but also helps you feel more confident.

Why declutter your wardrobe?

A cluttered wardrobe can lead to decision fatigue, wasted time, and unnecessary stress. When you can’t find what you’re looking for, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and frustrated and ultimately opt for what you usually wear. By decluttering your wardrobe, you are -

  • Simplifying your choices: With fewer items, it’s easier to see what you have and make quick decisions about what to wear.
  • Saving time: An organised wardrobe means no more searching for that missing piece of clothing.
  • Reducing stress: A tidy space is calming and can positively impact your mood and overall wellbeing.
  • Creating space: Free up space for new items that truly reflect your current style and needs.

How to declutter your wardrobe

Step 1: Set aside time. Dedicate a specific time to tackle your wardrobe. Depending on its size, this could take anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day. If you are struggling for time, do a category at a time. (Trousers, dresses, tops etc.)

Step 2: Empty your wardrobe. Take everything out of your wardrobe or if you are decluttering by category, take it out of the space you are focusing on. Group items of the same together. For example dresses, trousers, tops. It is a good idea to group items further, for example if you are grouping tops, you might have blouses, long sleeve t shirts, short sleeve t-shirts. This will give you a clear view of everything you own and help you see how much you actually have.

Step 3: Sort and categorise. As you go through each item, sort them into four categories:

  • Keep: Items you love and wear regularly.
  • Donate: Items in good condition that you no longer wear.
  • Sell: High-quality or designer items that you can sell online or at pre-loved clothing Boutique such as Willow and Eve.
  • Discard: Items that are worn out, damaged, or no longer wearable.

Step 4: Ask the right questions. When deciding whether to keep an item, ask yourself:

  • Do I love it?
  • Have I worn it in the past year?
  • Does it fit well and flatter my body?
  • Is it in good condition?
  • Does it suit my current lifestyle and style?

Step 5: Organise your wardrobe. Once you’ve decided what to keep, it’s time to organise. Group similar items together: tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, and accessories. Consider organising by colour or season to make it easier to find what you need. Use storage solutions like baskets and drawer dividers to keep smaller items tidy.

Step 6: Maintain your wardrobe. Keep your wardrobe clutter-free by regularly reviewing and editing its contents. A seasonal declutter can help you stay on top of what you have and ensure your wardrobe remains functional and enjoyable.

Top tips for wardrobe decluttering

  • One in, one out: For every new item you add to your wardrobe, remove one that you no longer need or love.
  • Use quality hangers: Invest in good hangers to keep your clothes in shape and make your wardrobe look more organised.
  • Store out of season clothes: Pack away clothes that are out of season to free up space and keep your wardrobe focused on what you need right now.
  • Choose quality over quantity: Investing in pieces that are high quality ensures long lasting style and offers greater value over time.

From working with my clients, I’ve learned that the key to a successful declutter is to be honest with yourself. It’s easy to hold on to items out of guilt or nostalgia, but remember that your wardrobe should serve you and your current lifestyle. Don’t be afraid to let go of things that no longer bring you joy or serve a purpose, even if you did spend a lot of money on them.

Decluttering your wardrobe can seem like a daunting task, but with a clear plan and a bit of dedication, you can transform it into an organised, stress-free space. By regularly maintaining your wardrobe, you’ll continue to reap the benefits of a clutter-free environment.
